50 - Olivia
The mood was gloomy in Olivia’s apartment where the camping trip survivors had gathered. Cradled in Matt’s arms at one end of the couch, her puffy eyes testament to the hours spent crying, Olivia felt as if her heart had been ripped out of her chest. Sitting beside Jake in a love seat forming a ninety-degree angle with the couch, Maya appeared to have finally given up on comforting Olivia.
They’d dropped Brad off at the town’s only hospital with a concussion a few hours earlier. No one in the group had felt like staying with the quarterback after he’d received a prognosis of full recovery. They had more urgent matters to attend to, finding Lucy being at the top of their list.
“It seems pretty clear that the vampires are after Olivia,” said Jake. “Why, we don’t know, but it’s beside the point. What I don’t understand is what the werewolves wanted from us,” he added reflectively.
“Vamps often enslave other preternaturals and use them for protection or sometimes just for entertainment. I’d be surprised if the vamps wanted anything from Olivia beside a new pet. No offense, Olivia,” stated Maya in a matter-of-fact tone.
Too distraught to be offended, Olivia remained silent.
The truthful introductions had been made on the journey back to town, and the nature of all protagonists properly established. Maya was an elvish princess and she had known all along that Olivia was a werewolf. She’d told this to Jake, a human and longtime boyfriend she’d met while attending Purdue University. Finally, Matt, a human, hadn’t suspected a thing about anyone and had repeatedly asked the others to pinch him in the hopes he would wake up from this hellish nightmare.
“I’m with you, man. At first I was glad to see the wolves—freaked out but glad. It looked like they were going to take the trash out for us, but then when that one turned on me… I thought my time had come,” said Matt, choking on the last words. “Thank you, Maya. Without you, I was a goner.”
“Don’t mention it,” answered the elf. “Maybe the werewolves also want to recruit Olivia. She’s a rather big wolf, bigger than most of the ones we saw today. If for some reason they’re after the vamps, they could probably use Olivia on their side.”
“How are we going to find Lucy?” asked Olivia, who wasn’t interested in their various enemies’ motivations but only in her sister’s fate. She grabbed a tissue from the box placed directly in front of her on the coffee table. “We must act quickly before they harm Lucy… or worse,” she added, thinking about what the werewolves had done to her.
“Are we even sure the vampires took her?” Matt had a valid point. Lucy had been missing at the end of the battle, but nobody had actually seen the blood-suckers taking her.
“That’s the only possible explanation. The werewolves had no way of kidnapping her in their animal form without one of us noticing. And if one of them had morphed back, we’d have caught up with them when we tried.
